Project Overview
Public art plays a powerful role in celebrating culture, inspiring communities, and marking historic events. During the Women’s Rugby World Cup, Northampton became one of the central locations for the tournament, with the Saints ground hosting key matches.
To mark the occasion, a striking mural was created in the town centre, celebrating women’s rugby and the players who continue to inspire the next generation.
AGS London was brought in to ensure this important piece of artwork remained protected against vandalism and graffiti, preserving its message and visual impact for the duration of the competition and beyond.
Challenge
Murals located in public spaces are vulnerable to graffiti and environmental damage. With the Women’s Rugby World Cup bringing thousands of visitors to Northampton, it was vital to safeguard the mural from potential vandalism or accidental defacement—without altering its vibrant appearance.
The goal was simple but crucial: protect the wall without affecting the integrity or finish of the original artwork.
Solution
AGS London applied a specialist, sacrificial anti-graffiti coating designed to create an invisible protective barrier over the mural’s surface. This coating ensures that if graffiti or unwanted marks were to appear, they could be removed easily without damaging the paint beneath.
Our team carefully prepared the wall, ensuring every part of the mural was evenly treated while maintaining its original colour depth and finish. The product chosen was eco-friendly and compliant with conservation standards for public art.
Results
The Northampton mural now stands fully protected, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy it without the risk of damage from graffiti or pollution. The coating provides ongoing protection, making any future cleaning quick, safe, and effective.
The result is a vibrant, long-lasting mural that continues to celebrate women’s rugby and the community’s role in hosting a major global sporting event.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates AGS London’s commitment to preserving public art and community pride. By using advanced protective coatings and precise application methods, we helped ensure that this mural—honouring the Women’s Rugby World Cup and the spirit of Northampton—remains a lasting and inspiring landmark.
